Caretta Research Project, Wassaw Island, GA

Since 1973, the Caretta Research Project has been a hands-on research and conservation program dedicated to protecting the Loggerhead Seat Turtle, Caretta caretta. The primary goal of the project is to monitor loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) activity and to protect nests on Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge, Chatham County, Georgia. A second goal of the program is to educate the public on issues related to conservation and management of marine turtles via hands-on participation or public programming.
Each year, for 16 weeks during the summer, groups of volunteers travel to the beaches of Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge near Savannah, Georgia, USA. The volunteers monitor egg-laying activity / hatching rates and collect data on the loggerhead turtles.
